Literacy Development and Instruction in Elementary Education

This course prepares candidates to integrate literacy and support language development in the disciplines. The connection between language and literacy is purposefully examined as a vehicle for developing disciplinary and transdisciplinary knowledge and understandings. Challenging perspectives that literacy is simply a collection of discrete skills, sociocultural theory suggests that literacy is the means by which individuals make meaning and construct their understandings of the world. The integration of literacy within the content areas emphasizes the importance of developing language and literacies in context and provides students with authentic opportunities to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening for real audiences.
