Capstone in Teaching English Learners

4 CREDITS    |    TERM 4

The Capstone in Teaching English Learners offers a culminating experience for candidates in the MAT – TESOL program. Candidates work on summative assessment of the program and a professional development project.

The Capstone course is structured to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities by synthesizing and expanding upon what has been learned in previous MAT – TESOL courses. It is designed for both the new and experienced teachers to reflect on and modify their ability to facilitate learning and then to prepare themselves to exert leadership in their professional field. The main aim of the course is to complete the summative assessment that will focus on carrying out and reflecting on a whole teaching task. The second component of the course is to design and carry out a professional development project. The professional development project can be a formal research paper, an action research project, the development of a portfolio for job seeking purposes or another project determined in discussion with the candidate and their instructor. The course strives to provide candidates with a final opportunity to complete a project that is directly useful to them in practice.
