My Journey with USC
My name is Laurel, welcome to my USC blog! I live in sunny San Diego, CA. and am working on my Master’s in Teaching as a student in the MAT@USC delivered online. I have a dog who aside from school work consumes most of my time! I am thrilled about this journey I recently started at USC and am anxious to share more with you along the way!
I always loved learning about the past when I was in elementary and secondary school. I loved hearing about historical events and enjoyed thinking about how every event I learned about made up the world, the country, and person I am today. I had several wonderful history teachers in High School but quickly came to look forward to attending my AP history class during my junior year. My AP history teacher was a riot! Not only was he funny, but I learned a lot along the way. He was an effective teacher because he tied contemporary issues into past issues, truly demonstrating the importance of implications of our history in the modern world. Until this point, I had always wanted to be a psychologist, specializing in family therapy. It was during this academic year that my mindset transformed. I realized I loved hearing and telling the story of history and understood that if I could potentially share this with others I would be truly happy. At this point, I decided I too would like to teach high school history.
I choose to attend USC because of its incredible reputation. I got into a handful of credible schools, however I knew right away I would be attending USC! USC had always been on my dream school list. As soon as I got my letter of acceptance, I immediately called my parents who were in shock! “USC?!!!” they cried. “We are so proud of you!!” I selected to attend the MAT program at USC because of much more though. The convenience of being able to hold a job while in school and being able to readily travel anywhere in the globe while attending lecture via the 2SC platform is absolutely amazing. I am so happy with my decision to attend USC and know the credible name, rigorous education, and dedication to excellence will continue to open many doors for me in the future.
In 5 years, I see myself teaching history at a secondary level. I would eventually like to obtain my PhD and move onto the university level. I hope to tackle this next step in my education with USC as well! I love being a “student for life” and enjoy learning new things about the world around me as well as about myself every day. Thank you for joining me on my journey!
