Why did you choose USC Rossier?
I chose USC Rossier for many reasons. I loved the fact that Rossier had an emphasis on urban education. I have made plans to stay near Los Angeles, California, in the upcoming years, and classroom experience in an urban setting was really important to me. Also, I needed a program that was versatile and fit my schedule. The fact that Rossier offered an online MAT program was an added bonus. Not to mention, I was extremely impressed with the online platform when the Admissions Counselor first showed me a demonstration. The online classroom ran so smoothly and was easy to navigate.
What do you love most about teaching?
It’s an honor to have the opportunity to influence young minds and watch the students develop into responsible young adults. While I absolutely love teaching my students about science, what I love most about teaching is the lessons that my students teach me. The students have taught me a thing or two about community, pop culture and smartphone technology. Trust me — the list goes on and on. Needless to say, I have learned so much from my students, and I have grown so much as a person due to my experiences during guided practice.
What is your most memorable moment?
My first interview as a teacher was by far the most memorable experience. I had to teach a sample lesson at the school that was interviewing me. This was the same school where I had completed the first portion of student teaching. I remember walking into the room and seeing familiar faces of students and faculty members. The students were excited to see me again and whispered words of encouragement like, “You got this, Miss.” I was driving home on the freeway after the interview when I received a phone call from my master teacher. He told me that the administration had decided to extend me a job offer. When the phone call ended, there was a moment of relief, followed by tears of joy. I laughed with excitement and couldn’t wait to share the news with my family and friends. It truly was a moment to remember.
What is next for you? What do you plan to do after graduation?
I happily accepted a position as a chemistry teacher at Ánimo Pat Brown Charter High School, which is a Green Dot school in Los Angeles, California. I am overjoyed that I get the opportunity to watch my students continue to grow as young adults. I am thankful that I had a role in their academic development, and I am excited to see what the future holds for each student.
